Important Notice! The Devil’s Nose Train Alausi is Operating Again
Taking the train to the Devil’s Nose is truly one of the most thrilling adventures travelers can experience in Ecuador. The journey begins in Alausí, a charming traditional village in the Ecuadorian Andes that still preserves its historic 19th-century architecture.

Where is Alausí?

Landscape of Alausi
Alausí is located about four hours by car from Quito. Along the way, you will enjoy picturesque landscapes, cross fertile valleys, admire majestic mountains such as Chimborazo, and even pass by the beautiful Colta Lagoon.
The Devil´s Nose Train Journey to Alausi

Alausi Train Station
The trip starts at Alausí’s town station, from where the train descends almost vertically into the canyon of the Alangasi River.

In fact, this dramatic stretch involves a descent of nearly 300 meters. For much of the ride, the railway line follows the curves of the canyon, offering breathtaking views.
Why is it Called the Devil’s Nose Train Ride?

Devil’s Nose Train view
Once the train reaches the top of the mountain and approaches the bottom of the canyon, a gigantic triangular rock emerges, shaped like a grotesque nose. Consequently, it became known as the Devil’s Nose. To overcome the steep cliff, the train must perform several zig-zag maneuvers: it stops at the edge of the rock, an operator switches the tracks, the train then goes backward, and finally it changes direction again to move forward.
Continuing the Adventure through the Devil’s Nose train in Alausi

After this unique engineering feat, the train continues on to Sibambe Station. Here, visitors can appreciate the handicrafts of the Nizag people, traditionally made with agave fiber.
Travel Recommendations
To ensure your trip is both comfortable and safe, I highly recommend hiring private transportation or a private driver. This not only makes the journey smoother but also guarantees an unforgettable travel experience.
