Firstly, the place is surrounded by mystical landscapes and mountains. Secondly, every year hundreds of birds called Cuvivi (Bartramia Longicauda/Upland Sandpiper) migrate from North America to the lagoon. They dive into the depths of the lake to end their journey in a collective suicide.
Despite scientists being unable to explain this phenomenon, for the locals, it is a celebration. They await the flocks to perform rituals and festivities, such as the Bird Tribute Festival. In this way, according to the tradition of the local people, they await the return of their loved ones who migrated to North America.
Hike around the Ozogoche lakes.
It is advisable to start the first day by visiting the handicraft market of Guamote. On the second day, your private driver will take you to the Ozogoche Lakes. Firstly, we will enter Sangay National Park, and after a 30-minute walk, we will reach the first lake called Magtayan. Then, we will hike for 45 minutes to observe the Green Pond. Furthermore, the mystical Cubillin Lake is located 3 hours away. It is at this site where the birds commit suicide.
