The Chimborazo volcano is one of the highest volcanoes in Ecuador. Above all, it is an imposing volcano located south of Quito, 3 and a half hours by car. It is located near the city of Riobamba in the central Andes, at an altitude of 6263 meters above sea level. For this reason, its summit is the farthest point on the planet from the center of the earth
How to get the Chimborazo Volcano?
From Quito take the road that leads through the Avenue of the Volcanoes. On the way, you can see some volcanoes such as Cayambe, Antizana, Illinizas, Cotopaxi Tungurahua, and others. Then in Ambato take the road to Guaranda. Approximately 60 km. and you arrive at the sandy area of Chimborazo. Overall, it is a desert area that is located in the lower part of the volcano composed of sand domes and sparse vegetation, which gives it the characteristic of a desert.
It is very common to observe in this area large snowfalls that cover the entire landscape in white and contrast with the green of the mountains in the lower parts. In addition, in this area, you can observe small groups of Vicuñas. These are part of this impressive landscape of the Andes.
What to do at Chimborazo Volcano?
To enter the refuge, it is necessary to register at the entrance of the National Park. Then drive 45 minutes until you reach the first refuge located at 4800 meters. Then, you continue to the second refuge called Whymper, through a path of moderate difficulty. In this way, we arrive at 5000 m. This trail also leads us to a small lagoon called Condor Cocha located at 5100 m. This is really a fantastic adventure. It is a great challenge for those who love adventure.
Where can stay?
Chimborazo Lodge is the only place that is very close to the volcano. In fact, it is the only lodge around that is located inside the Reserve. It has an impressive view of the volcano. The interior decoration is unique, in fact, it has many pictures of famous climbers. In addition to objects related to a high mountain and mountaineering equipment. However, 15 minutes away is located in the small town of San Juan, where you can find accommodation at a much cheaper price. Thus, I recommend staying at the Tambo Pak Samay Hostel for those who have a small budget. The cost is $15 including breakfast. It also has parking.
