The Ingapirca Ruins is located in the province of Cañar, 70 km from Cuenca. This is the best-preserved Inca architectural complex in the country. It is undoubtedly the most important pre-Columbian archaeological site in Ecuador.
Why are the ruins of Ingapirca important?
This archaeological complex concentrated the Cañari culture (500 A.D.) and was an important ceremonial zone. In addition, it united diverse cultures throughout the Tahuantinsuyo and became, like Macchu Picchu in Cuzco (Peru), symbols of the power of the Inca civilization.
After the conquest of the Incas, they turned the castle into an important religious, political, scientific, military, and administrative center.
How to get to the Ingapirca Ruins?
Ingapirca is located 70 km from Cuenca. To reach this site, you must take the main road towards Cañar. After Cañar, you have to go to El Tambo and then drive for 20 minutes on the road to Ingapirca.

What can you see inside the Ingapirca Archaeological Complex?
On the outside, there is a museum that has more than 170 archeological pieces found in the area. Consequently, 4 rooms were created to show most of the pieces. Most importantly, these archeological objects narrate the presence of the Incas and the Cañaris in this territory.
Then, you enter the archaeological complex. Firstly, you can observe a labyrinth in ruins and extensive roads made with stone walls.
Secondly, the complex is divided into some sectors such as; Pilaloma, the Great Court, the Palaces, and the Temple of the Sun. However, many of these constructions have round shapes and polygons of different dimensions. Likewise, during the tour these constructions makes us imagine how were the homes, life, and customs of these cultures.
